Greene County Community
School District
The Greene County Community School District located in Jefferson, Iowa comprises 381 square miles and includes
the towns of Jefferson, Scranton, Rippey, Dana, and Grand Junction.
Over the last few years, our school district has been heavily invested in!
In 2020, the Greene County High School was built including a 1,200-seat gymnasium and 700-seat Performing Arts Center. And that’s not all, with the construction of the high school the Greene County Career Academy was also included in the construction. This Career Academy, equipped and staffed by Iowa Central Community College, offers students the ability to participate in numerous Career and Technical Education Programs such as Agriculture, Computer Science, Construction Trades, Culinary and Hospitality, Health Care, and Welding and allows education in Greene County to be taken to new heights! With college classes being offered to high schoolers within their class curriculum, allowing the ability to obtain 30+ college credits (allowing many to graduate high school with almost a full year of college completed), and providing college programs for both students and adults, the commitment to educating our community is abundant.
Community colleges aren’t the only ones that are taking notice of our school district.
Tech company, Accenture has opened The Forge in Jefferson and has partnered with the Career Academy’s Computer Science/ Programming course to identify the most important skills for a successful tech career and implement them into their coursework. In addition, once students complete their coursework at the Career Academy, they have the option to enroll in the Forge Academy, located at The Forge right here in Jefferson! This training program has been designed to prepare rural Iowa students for high-demand software development jobs anywhere in the world and offers an amazing career opportunity after the program has been completed. While our high school and career academy offer amazing environments for growth and development it is not the only place where investments have been made.
In an effort to provide our Greene County youth with outstanding learning environments, our middle school took over our previous high school location and received additional improvements and renovations in 2020 and 2021. And our elementary school acquired a beautiful addition to its building in 2019!
Creating amazing learning environments is just one focus of educating our youth, but our school district also believes in giving opportunities to create well-rounded students.
Our high school students get the opportunity to be in classes providing real-world experiences! Some of these classes include the Ram Restaurant & Bakery which allows students to create a full restaurant experience from making food to serving it, catering events, and taking custom orders. Our construction class gives students the opportunity to build a home that at the end of the school year is put on the local market for sale. From designing, ordering materials, and building, they get the experience of the full process of a construction company. Our high school students also offer a Little Ram Preschool which is a student-run preschool located in the Greene County High School, serving children ages 2-5 years old.
Whether your child/children are interested in agriculture, arts, music, sports, theater, or a variety of club opportunities, with an abundance of activities to be a part of, there is a way for every student to be involved at any age! We also encourage students to be a part of as many things as they would like, allowing them the opportunity to experience all that our school district has to offer!
Students are essential in having a great school system but having amazing staff to teach them is vital!
The teaching staff at Greene County Schools are dedicated to educating our youth and passionate about helping them to discover and utilize their full potential. They recognize students' abilities to obtain information differently so display the curriculum in multiple facets. They take the time to know their students, provide individual assistance with smaller class sizes, and are supportive in making sure that our students feel confident in the material they are learning. All of the staff at Greene County Schools contribute to creating the wonderful school district we are so fortunate to have!

Child Care
The care and development of the youth in Greene County is a major focus in Jefferson. In addition to existing in-home care providers, two childcare centers have recently been constructed.
Natural Wonders Learning Center was built and opened in 2018.
The Children’s Center (previously known as The Early Learning Center) has been providing care since 2005 but built a new building in 2022.
Our youth have amazing learning environments, a creative curriculum, outdoor play, and a variety of opportunities for real-world growth and development!
