Inside Jefferson’s first Build Your Own Business (BYOB) event
March 3, 2026
Our Economic Vitality Team hosted the first quarterly “Build Your Own Business” (BYOB) event, bringing together aspiring entrepreneurs, community leaders, and regional partners for an evening focused on learning, connection, and possibility.
The goal was simple: create a space where people who are thinking about starting or growing a business in Jefferson could ask questions, gain insight, and feel supported.
An evening full of knowledge
The evening featured a panel discussion with Chad Stevens with the City of Jefferson, Matt Wetrich with Jefferson Matters, and Greg Piklapp with Greene County Development Corporation and AREA. They shared thoughtful and practical perspectives from their roles and experiences. From navigating city processes to understanding what it really takes to get started, including available resources and grant opportunities, the conversation was open, helpful, and encouraging.
There’s something powerful about hearing directly from people who are actively involved in shaping our community. The panel didn’t just share information, they shared real insight and real encouragement.
We are incredibly grateful for their time and willingness to be part of the discussion!
Collaboration in action
BYOB was made possible through partnership and collaboration with Iowa State Extension Office, Greene County Development Corporation, Iowa Central Community College, City of Jefferson, Multicultural Family Resource Center, HUB 712, and North Central Iowa SBDC.
That kind of regional support matters. Entrepreneurship can feel overwhelming, but when local and regional organizations come together in one room, it sends a clear message: you don’t have to do this alone.
Leadership behind the scenes
A special thank you goes to Economic Vitality Chair Peg Raney for coordinating and organizing the event. Her leadership and commitment to bringing high-quality resources to Jefferson were evident throughout the evening. We’re also grateful to Teresa Green, Kristin Russell, Jacque Andrew, and Nikki Uebel for the organization and behind-the-scenes work that helped make the event such a success. It truly takes a team to bring something like this together, and their time and effort did not go unnoticed.
The Economic Vitality Team continues to focus on creating meaningful opportunities that strengthen our business community, and BYOB is one more step in that direction.
Stay tuned - this is just the beginning!
This was the first of what will become a quarterly series. Jefferson continues to grow because people are willing to show up, ask questions, and invest in what’s possible. Future dates and topics will be announced soon!
