How to Make the Most of Summer in Jefferson
A guide to sunshine, small-town charm, and things you won’t want to miss!
Summer in Jefferson has a certain kind of magic. The kind where music floats from the Bell Tower at lunchtime, the farmers market is filled with familiar faces, and weekends are packed with things to do. If you're looking for ways to enjoy the season, here’s how to make the most of it.
Get Outside and Enjoy the Weather
When the sun’s out, there’s no better place to be than outside in Jefferson. Walk or bike the Raccoon River Valley Trail, loop through Daubendiek Park, or hit the trails at Squirrel Hollow. If you’re looking for a weekend adventure, head to Spring Lake for camping, fishing, or a hike.
The Jefferson Community Golf Course is a great spot to spend a summer afternoon. With 9 holes and a laid-back atmosphere, it’s perfect for a quick round or a full day on the greens.
The city pool is a favorite on hot days, especially for families. Bell Tower Plaza is perfect for a quick lunch with a view, and Twiins Shoppe is the go-to stop for ice cream. Make time to just sit and listen to the Bell Tower chimes, too!
If the heat gets to be a bit much, cool off indoors with a game of bowling at Spare Time Lanes. It’s a fun, easy way to spend an afternoon with family or friends.
And on August 23, you can take part in the first-ever Spiked Apple 5K at Deal’s Orchard. The scenic course winds through the orchard, with cider and donuts waiting at the finish line.
Shop Local and Catch Up with the Community
Start your week by swinging through the Farmers Market every Tuesday afternoon from 4-6 PM at the Greene County Fairgrounds. You’ll find everything from fresh veggies and baked goods to handmade gifts. It’s relaxed, easy, and a great way to support your neighbors.
While you’re out, make time to explore Jefferson’s locally owned shops. Whether you’re on the square or off, there are all kinds of businesses to check out. You’ll find everything from home décor and boutique clothing to vintage finds, handmade goods, and one-of-a-kind gifts. Downtown is completely walkable, so you can pop in and out of stores, enjoy public art along the way, and stroll through the colorful alleyways.
The Greene County Fair happens July 8 through 14 and brings out the best of Greene County — livestock shows, fair food, live music, and that good old fairground energy.
For more small-town charm, check out the city-wide garage sales July 11-12. It’s the perfect excuse to walk around town and maybe find a hidden gem or two. And if you’re up for a casual morning with good coffee and conversation, Java & Juice events are scattered throughout the summer and hosted at different local spots. It's one of the best ways to stay connected and see what’s new.
And for a slower pace, check out the Garden Talks at Thomas Jefferson Gardens throughout the summer. These short, casual gatherings are a peaceful way to learn something new and enjoy the gardens in full bloom.
Live Music and Local Art
Jefferson makes it easy to enjoy live music in all kinds of ways. Tower Tunes is a fun little tradition where a local musician plays live from the top of the Bell Tower every Wednesday around lunchtime. It’s just 15 minutes, but it’s a cool experience that gives downtown a unique vibe.
If you’re more into evenings out, make time for Ciders at Sunset at Deal’s Orchard. There’s live music, food trucks, and of course, hard cider. It’s laid back and a great spot to unwind with friends. At the end of June, Elliott Art Studio is hosting a concert with Goldpine, a folk duo from Nashville. You can also catch Porch Fest on July 13, where musicians set up on porches around town for a relaxed afternoon of live performances. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the small-town version of a music festival.
History Boy Theater is also bringing something big to the stage this summer with The Rocky Musical, running August 1–2 and 8–10. This high-energy musical brings the story of underdog boxer Rocky Balboa to the stage, based on the Academy Award-winning film.
Behind-the-Scenes & Hands-On Experiences
This summer, you’ll also have the chance to go behind the scenes at Wild Rose Casino during an After Hours Insider Event. It’s not something that happens often, so if you’re curious about how it all works, this is a fun one to check out.
And for anyone who loves a good DIY moment, keep an eye out for the Letterpress Printing Workshop hosted by Warm Wishes. You’ll get to learn the art of old-school printing and walk away with something cool you made yourself.
The Stitch also has a full lineup of upcoming craft events, with options for all skill levels. It’s a great way to get creative and connect with others in a relaxed setting.
A Classic Event
If there’s one event that really brings people together, it’s Cruisin’ to the Square in August. Classic cars, tractors, motorcycles, and a downtown full of energy. Add in the Poker Walk and a few food trucks, and you’ve got an evening that feels like peak summer in a small town.
Make it Yours
The best part about summer in Jefferson is how easy it is to enjoy. From Jefferson Parks and Rec programs to the brand-new pickleball courts, there’s something for every kind of summer mood. Some days are made for live music and events. Other days are better for slowing down, going for a walk, catching a matinee at the Sierra Community Theatre, or heading to the Public Library to browse the shelves or take part in one of their summer programs.
Whether you live here or you’re just visiting, summer in Jefferson is all about the little moments that stick with you. So, get out there and Experience Jefferson!
